Recently it was Data Privacy Day...who knew such a thing existed? Well here is Facebook attempting to provide you with some ease, by debuting their yearly Privacy Progress Update. With two new modules- one focused on safety and the other on privacy for teens- users can learn how to protect themselves and their information and additionally, the special protections that are offered specifically toward young people. Users can better understand their privacy options, and also sign up to receive notifications to review privacy settings on a regular basis. Meta has also implemented stricter age requirements for under-aged users. When creating an account for under 18 year old users (or 16, depending on the country) the account will default to more private settings right from the beginning. Stricter rules on what and how advertisers reach teens through the platform were also addressed.
Before you go we have to the privacy features in the Messenger App... It's okay to hit send now, they've updated some key features here too. Have you been in a group convo and wanted to leave but didn't want the whole group to see you've bounced? Now you can Irish goodbye and NO ONE will be notified publicly. THANK GOD. You also get to choose who sees if you are active online instead of everyone seeing it all the time, a great feature just in time for the recent #NationalStalkingAwarenessMonth.
Meta has also been laying down the groundwork for how the virtual space in Metaverse will conduct itself. So if you are already taking Quest e-meetings, know that experts in academia, civil rights groups and industry organizations have been consulted to help ensure the space is being innovated responsibly and with tact.
